Sioux Falls Residents Get New Tool to Reduce Waste
BINfluencer Launches Waste Diversion Directory
SIOUX FALLS, S.D., November 15, 2024 – Just in time for America Recycles Day, BINfluencer has introduced an exciting new resource for Sioux Falls residents: the Waste Diversion Directory. This free online tool is designed to help the community find better options for recycling, safe disposal, reuse, and donations—keeping items out of the landfill while supporting local businesses and nonprofits.
The directory, available at DiversionDirectory.org, offers interactive maps on where to bring items that don’t belong in curbside recycling bins or the trash. It connects users to a variety of services, including donation centers, recycling facilities, and safe disposal locations for hazardous materials like electronics and batteries.
“This directory is a practical and impactful tool for Sioux Falls,” said Shannon Dwire, President of Millennium Recycling, BINfluencer’s primary sponsor. “It goes beyond just raising awareness by giving residents easy access to solutions. By connecting people to local options for recycling, donating, or safely disposing of items, we’re supporting the community and extending the life of our landfill.”
A Growing Problem with a Simple Solution
The Sioux Falls landfill is filling up faster than anticipated, driven by rapid population growth and declining recycling rates. With more waste being sent to the landfill, there is an urgent need to reverse this trend.
BINfluencer’s mission is to help the community address this challenge by promoting waste diversion. Items like old furniture, electronics, leftover paint, and more don’t need to end up in the trash. Many of these materials can be recycled or reused locally, reducing the burden on the landfill and supporting the local economy.
“The directory makes it easier for everyone to do their part,” said Stephanie Gongopoulos, President of BINfluencer. “We’re excited to bring together organizations that offer creative, responsible solutions for landfill alternatives.”
More Than Just a Directory
The Waste Diversion Directory is part of BINfluencer’s broader efforts to reduce waste and increase recycling. Additional initiatives include:
- Developing a “What to Recycle” app to guide residents on proper recycling practices.
- The BINfluencer Educational Trailer, a traveling classroom teaching 4th and 5th graders about waste diversion.
- Recycling facility tours, giving residents a behind-the-scenes look at how recycling works.
Residents are encouraged to visit DiversionDirectory.org to explore options or download a printable PDF of the directory. By using this tool, everyone in Sioux Falls can make a meaningful difference in reducing landfill waste, supporting local businesses, and conserving valuable resources.
