Recycling Explained

BACK TO SCHOOL TIME IS HERE!

Ready to kick off the school year with a fresh start? We’ve got 9 simple tips to help you make a positive impact while keeping things budget-friendly:

  1. Shop Smart: Still need to pick up some supplies? Opt for items with minimal packaging or those made from recycled materials. It’s a win for your wallet and the planet!
  2. Reuse What You Already Have: Before you head out to shop, take stock of what you’ve got at home. Last year’s binders, notebooks, and pencils are still good to go and can save you money while cutting down on waste.
  3. Pack Lunches the Smart Way: Ditch the disposable baggies and bottles. Instead, use reusable containers and utensils. Label them to avoid mix-ups, and if your school recycles, stick to recyclable packaging. If they don’t recycle yet, keep reading!
  4. Be a Recycling Champion at Your School: If your school doesn’t have a recycling program, why not take the lead? Encourage them to start one, and we at Millennium are ready to help get things rolling.
  5. Recycle That Homework: From worksheets to art projects, students and teachers go through a lot of paper. Make sure it all ends up in your single-stream recycling bin. Just avoid too much paint, tape, or glue—simple coloring is fine!
  6. Choose a Lighter Route: Walking or biking is a great way to get to school. If that’s not an option, the bus or carpooling works too. If you must drive, make sure your car’s tuned up for better gas mileage and a smaller footprint.
  7. Avoid the Tech Trap: Kids don’t need every new gadget that hits the market. Consider refurbished electronics from local stores like Bargain Bytes to save money and cut down on e-waste. Got old devices? Recycle them at the Sioux Falls Household Hazardous Waste Facility or with SEAM.
  8. Donate What You Don’t Need: Encourage your kids to take care of their stuff, but if you’ve got extras, donate them to local thrift stores or community programs. Supplies like crayons, markers, and notebooks can find a second life in a daycare or art program.
  9. Set an Example: Make recycling and reusing a part of your everyday routine at home. Your kids will pick up on these habits and share them with their friends and teachers, making a bigger impact.
