What to do with Oil

Plastic bottles, tubs and jugs can be recycled if EMPTY and CLEAN.

Here are some tips for getting rid of used cooking oil and motor oil containers in Sioux Falls.

Before Recycling Oil Containers:

• Remove and discard the cap from oil bottle.
• Drain ALL contents; Oil jugs must be completely empty before placing in bin.

Disposing of Used Oil:

• Drain used oil into a sealable container (If cooking oil has solidified, you can throw it right into the trash).
• Bring to an oil recycler. Millennium does not accept used oil, but there are many other local options. For Sioux Falls area residents, you can bring motor oil, oil filters, cooking oil, vegetable oil, grease, etc to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility for free. If you’re not in the Sioux Falls area or looking for other options, the SDENR provides a great list of companies who will accept oil for recycling.

What NOT to do with Used Oil:

• Do not place full oil containers in recycling bin – This can contaminate other recyclables and your bin, and causes issues at the processing facility.
• Do not pour oil down the drain – This will clog your pipes (If it happens, pour boiling water down the drain with a spoonful of vinegar and baking soda to help clear it).
• Do not add oil to your compost pile – This may cause your compost to rot.
• Do not pour motor oil into the gutter or onto empty land – This is toxic to plants and animals and can pollute soil and drinking water.

Other items accepted at Sioux Falls Household Hazardous Waste (But NOT at Millennium): Oil absorbents, antifreeze, latex and oil based paints, fluorescent lamps, mercury, lead-acid batteries, Ni-Cd batteries, lithium batteries, propane tanks, and aerosol cans, Automotive Chemicals, including Motor oil (new or used), Used oil filters, Brake fluid, Antifreeze, Transmission fluid, Windshield washer fluid, Cooking Oil, vegetable oil, grease, etc.
