"Glass recycling is back" says Millennium Recycling CEO.
Millennium Recycling of Sioux Falls announced today that they would begin recycling glass in the city of Sioux Falls effective January 1, 2008. Millennium Recycling will accept brown, green and clear post-consumer glass bottles through local haulers utilizing its 'One Container, No Sorting' Single Stream Collection system.
"We did a survey of Sioux Falls households earlier this year and found that over 63% would recycle more if they could recycle glass. With that kind of demand, for the first time since 1999, we're proud to say that 'glass recycling is back'" said Jake Anderson, CEO of Millennium Recycling. "According to last year's city report, each year 4,700 tons of glass are dumped in Sioux Falls' Landfill. By collecting glass, we are working to extend the life of the landfill, which will save the people of Sioux Falls millions of dollars."
The city report, released by RW Beck in 2006, identified over 40 percent of materials dumped in the landfill as directly banned by city ordinance. Glass, while not explicitly banned under current ordinance, is a recyclable material that can be used in other consumer production.
"It's important to note that we are not simply using this glass as landfill cover or fill. The glass we collect will be recycled for the production of fiberglass, floor tiles, abrasives and specialized fillers for highway paint" Anderson continued.
Though haulers will only be able to collect glass through Single Stream collection, consumers can use the recycling drop-off at Millennium for any bottle glass recycling. Questions about whether your hauler is collecting through Single Stream can be directed to Millennium Recycling at 605.336.1744
